Embracing the Future: Key Takeaways from Friday’s Future of Finance Lab
On Friday 10th of October, we hosted the first of many fortnightly sessions of the Future of Finance Lab, where finance professionals gathered to explore what it means to be an AI-powered accountant. The session was packed with practical demonstrations, candid discussions, and a strong sense of community.
Building the AI-Powered Accountant
The session kicked off with a focus on the evolving role of accountants in an AI-driven world. We introduced the HACK framework—Hygiene, Automation, Capability, and Knowledge—as essential pillars for leveraging AI in finance.
It is important to have a framework to explore these evolving topics. The technical details, tools and content may evolve, but the framework and foundations that we are building towards is critical to ensure stability and a way to navigate the future.

Excel fluency remains critical, especially as AI tools are not infallible and human expertise is needed to validate and interpret results.
Practical AI Applications and Honest Realities
A highlight was the guest appearance by Andrew Siah, co-founder of TabAI. Andrew shared real-world experiences of integrating AI into Excel, showcasing how tasks like reconciliation and data extraction can be dramatically accelerated.
However, both Andrew and I emphasized the importance of human oversight, as AI is not yet reliable enough to replace accountants—rather, it upgrades them.
We discussed the limitations of current AI tools, including context length challenges and the necessity for robust data governance. The conversation also touched on integrating AI with ERP systems and the ongoing need for data privacy and compliance.
Community, Growth Mindset, and Human Skills
Beyond technical skills, the session underscored the value of a growth mindset and human qualities such as empathy, storytelling, and critical thinking. As AI automates more routine work, these uniquely human skills will become even more vital.
Hands-On Demonstrations
Participants saw live demos comparing manual data analysis with AI-powered approaches, highlighting both the speed and the current limitations of AI tools. We also previewed upcoming topics, including advanced Excel modeling, Power BI integration, and practical AI use cases in finance.
